Willow Basketmaking with Barry

Make your own woven willow basket with expert guidance from Barry Keegan. You’ll use willow shoots and wands to weave and twine a round base, and sharpened spokes and twined willow shoots to form the basket walls. The final basket will be about 10 inches tall. All materials provided. Enjoy a relaxing day on the lake as you learn and create. The workshop will run from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The fee is $60. Atlatl Workshop

Atlatl experts Bob and Cheryll Berg of Thunderbird Atlatl teach traditional and modern techniques of atlatl and dart construction, flint knapping, hafting stone points, and cordage making. Enjoy atlatl lore and coaching on the use of your new atlatl. Pre-registration required. Call 802-759-2412.  Fee of $70 includes instruction and materials. Workshop runs from noon to 5:00 PM. REVOLUTIONARY WOMEN of the Southern Lake Champlain Valley

This illustrated program introduces some of the resilient women of Vermont’s southern Lake Champlain Valley during the American Revolution, and provides national context. How did the war interrupt their lives? What were their contributions leading to settlement and as founders of their new towns and the new nation? Speakers are site administrator Elsa Gilbertson and site interpreter Paul Andriscin. An event delayed from 2020--in honor of the 101st anniversary of the 19th amendment. Part of a project funded by the Lake Champlain Heritage Partnership and Lake Champlain Basin Program. Please call ahead, 802-948-2000, to reserve your place. Included in regular admission.

A walking tour of Strafford Village which remains much the same as in Morrill’s time. Tours include Morrill’s birthplace, his father’s blacksmith shop, two libraries, the Strafford Town House, and the mausoleum where Morrill is buried.

Soldiers Atop the Mount

Reenactors honor the 1776-1777 history of Mount Independence during this living history event.  The popular interactive Baldwin Trail Walkabout, from 10:30 to 1:30, features experts at trail stations bringing the site’s history to life. Military tacticals and camp life and skills demonstrations. The day ends at 5:00. Admission is $6.00.

Suffrage Auto Tour & Blast from the Past: Chimney Point Herstory

Weather permitting the Suffrage Auto Tour with antique cars, touring weekends in August in the Lake Champlain region, comes to this area, to celebrate the 101st anniversary of the 19th amendment. A few automobiles will travel from the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum and arrive at Chimney Point about 12:30 Historic personages will be on hand to talk with people about the contributions and challenging lives of some of the early French and Vermont women here, and provide some show and tell. Try your hand at turning the crank for home-made ice cream; enjoy a sample while it lasts. This event will be held from noon until 3:00 PM. President Calvin Coolidge Birthday Celebration

Tour historic Plymouth Notch or enjoy a wagon ride around the village. Final rounds of the annual Coolidge Cup debate competition will take place throughout the day. The Coolidge Cup is a program of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation. At 12:00 noon, the Vermont National Guard will lead a march to the cemetery where a wreath from the White House will be placed at the president’s gravesite.

Vermont Days

The Vermont Historic Sites are celebrating Vermont Days this year by offering free admission at the Bennington Battle Monument, Mount Independence, and the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Sites on Saturday June 12, and Sunday June 13.
