Morrill Homestead Open House and Puppet Show

Bring the family and be our guests for an Ice Cream Social, Guided Tours of Justin Morrill’s Gothic Revival Home, Victorian Gardens, Interpretive Exhibits, and a Puppet Show. In “Bully! For The Three Big Pigs” a cast of hand-crafted marionettes romp through an artist’s studio, an opera stage, and the problem-solving mind of a builder, providing a feast for the eyes, ears, and imagination. 

Vermont Days at President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site

10 AM – 5 PM

Come kickstart the summer season at Calvin Coolidge’s hometown by enjoying free admission to the site. A ribbon cutting for the new special exhibit “Coolidge’s Contemporaries: The ascension of early 20th century world leaders” will take place on Sunday June 11 at 2:00 p.m.  The Orton Family, proprietors of the Vermont Country Store, will speak about the Coolidge legacy in Vermont and cut the ribbon. Refreshments to follow.

 

John Trumbull and the Declaration of Independence

1 PM – 2:30 PM

In this illustrated talk, Stephen Zeoli, president of the Mount Independence Coalition, will focus on the epic painting, The Declaration of Independence by noted artist John Trumbull, in the US Capitol rotunda. He will discuss Lt. Trumbull’s important contributions to Mount Independence and provide background on his work and research to create this painting. 

Strong Ground Guided History Walk

1 PM – 4 PM

Revolutionary War expert Mike Barbieri, Mount Independence Coalition president Stephen Zeoli, and site administrator Elsa Gilbertson lead a pre-season guided walk on and off the trails to explore this Revolutionary War site. The focus is looking for traces of Lt. John Trumbull’s Mount Independence, his work, and the American plans to build independence on Lake Champlain in 1776. Meet at museum for orientation. Wear sturdy boots, be prepared for off-trail walking, and dress for the weather. This is the first of two programs about John Trumbull. The second, an illustrated talk on May 28, delves into his epic painting, The Declaration of Independence. Co-sponsored by Mount Independence Coalition.

Morrill Homestead Gardens & Grounds

Work with the Homestead’s Master Gardeners to prepare the Victorian gardens for the 2023 season. This is the first of several projects designed to nurture the colorful annual beds in the pleasure ground and expand the kitchen garden—Morrill’s laboratory for experimenting with plant hardiness that contains a variety of roses, perennials, berry bushes, and herbs.

Come join us and become a part of Vermont’s history as we care for the historic landscape of this very influential American. You can earn all of your Master Gardener outreach hours with us.

What is provided:
Basic garden tools will be on hand. Snacks and beverages will be available throughout the morning.

Plymouth Notch Holiday Open House

Did you know that Calvin Coolidge was the first to President to host a National Tree Lighting Ceremony? The Coolidge State Historic Site will be celebrating the season with a tree lighting to take place on the porch of the Cilley General Store at 1:00. Immediately following, guests are invited to the historic Union Christian Church for caroling and recitations of President Coolidge’s Christmas addresses. Guests can also stroll through the historic village, pick-up last-minute holiday gifts at the museum gift shop clearance sale, make a live wreath, stencil holiday stationary, and taste cheeses at the Plymouth Cheese factory.  Admission to this family friendly event is free. Donations are always appreciated.

Hike into History

Enjoy fall at Mount Independence with a guided hike into history from 1:00 – 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 8th. Stephen Zeoli is your guide. He will show you many points of Revolutionary War interest, as we gear up for the 250th anniversary in 2026 of the Declaration of Independence and Mount Independence. Co-sponsored by Mount Independence Coalition. Included in museum admission--$6.00 adults, free for children under 15.
