Fiber-Dyeing Using Natural Materials

Join us for an educational and engaging hands-on afternoon with Justin Squizzero from the Burroughs Garret in Newbury, Vermont. Justin creates handspun, naturally-dyed, hand-woven textiles using methods and equipment from the 18th and 19th centuries. In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of natural dyeing using plants, minerals, and insects. Participants will take home samples of dyed textiles.

Time: 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Painting Botanicals Series with Jennifer Brown (Day 1)

In this series, on four consecutive Thursdays, we will work from life and explore the world of flowers. Using plants found on the grounds of the Morrill Homestead, we will study and explore nature up close. Some drawing instruction will be provided along with tips and practices in watercolor techniques. A suggested materials list provided upon registration.

Jennifer teaches watercolor classes at the Morrill Homestead and at AVA Gallery in Lebanon. She is a member of the Vermont Watercolor Society and exhibits her paintings at the Matt Brown Fine Art Gallery in Lyme, N.H.

Creative and Technical Photography

Join photographer Scott McClure Miller for a 3-class series in creative and technical photography.  Scott has worked in a variety of photographic disciplines including documentary, studio, landscape, and macro. The class will be structured as part visual seminar, part field practice, and part critique/problem-solving. While people with all levels of experience will benefit from taking this series, the emphasis will be toward those with no formal training. Bring your own camera and laptop, or use one of our cameras and laptops.

Willow Basketmaking with Barry

NOTE: This event has been postponed. Please check back with us in 2021.

Make your own woven willow basket with expert guidance from Barry Keegan. You’ll use willow shoots and wands to weave and twine a round base, and sharpened spokes and twined willow shoots to form the basket walls. The final basket will be about 10 inches tall. All materials provided. Enjoy a relaxing day on the lake as you learn and create. Workshop will be held from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Pre-registration and payment required, call (802) 759-2412. Atlatl Workshop

Atlatl experts Bob and Cheryll Berg of Thunderbird Atlatl teach traditional and modern techniques of atlatl and dart construction, flint knapping, hafting stone points, and cordage making. Enjoy atlatl lore and coaching on the use of your new atlatl. Pre-registration required. Workshop will be held from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. Fee includes instruction and materials. Vermont Archaeology Month event.

Guided Landscape Painting with Watercolor and Gouache

Artist Lillian Kennedy shows you how to stay fearless and serene during the creative process while you make a small Lake Champlain landscape painting. She explains the fundamentals and demonstrates options. You’ll have plenty of room for individual expression. Take home a painting and the skills to continue on your own. You will learn the tricks to make a painting kit that fits in a baggie that you can carry with you on all your travels. Workshop suitable for all skill levels from rank beginner to seasoned professional. Adults and children 10+. Class fee is $35 (all materials included). See also August 8.
