Portraits of Independence: The Faces of Mount Independence

This illustrated symposium examines the story of Mount Independence through the portraits of the limited number of people who were here and whose likenesses were taken. Site administrator Elsa Gilbertson presents the cast of characters and their portraits, removed from today’s audience by only one degree of separation (through the hand of the artists). A panel of responders, Michael Barbieri, Ennis Duling, and Stephen Zeoli, moderated by site interpreter Paul Andriscin, will provide insights about these people, such as what was happening when they were at Mount Independence, their Contributions, interactions, and if they survived, what they did after the war. Audience participation and discussion welcome. Light refreshments.

Soldiers Atop the Mount

Reenactors honor the 1776-1777 history of Mount Independence during this living history weekend.  Saturday’s popular interactive Baldwin Trail Walkabout features experts at trail stations bringing the site’s history to life. Follow soldiers on a woods skirmish, annual reading of Declaration of Independence on Sunday, camp life and skill demonstrations, and activities for all ages. Illustrated talks both days. Children's Revolutionary Storytime

Children, ages 6 to 10, are invited to come, with a responsible adult, to an hour of story time, with books, hands-on activities, simple crafts relating to the Revolutionary War time-period and history of Mount Independence, and some outdoor time if weather permits. Bring snacks if you like or a picnic to enjoy afterwards. Call (802) 948-2000 for details. Suggested donation of $5.00 per family. With the Orwell Free Library.

Inquiry into the Revolutionary Mind: What Were You Thinking Doctor Jonathan Potts and Reverend Thomas Allen?

Modern day historian Paul Andriscin turns back the time machine to interview two men who cared for the well-being of the soldiers at Mount Independence. Meet Dr. Jonathan Potts, physician-surgeon for the Continental Army in this region, and Reverend Thomas Allen, Army chaplain here in the fall of 1776 and June 1777.

Children will enjoy Revolutionary times learning about Mount Independence, archaeology, and more, with walks and new hands-on-activities.  Attendees will make special items to bring home.  Ages 6 to 11. Limited space.
