Mount Independence

Starting in front of the museum, Sue Wetmore, will guide you on this walk to look for and identify the birds of spring. Walk will be held from 8:00 to 10:00 AM. Wear study shoes and dress for the weather. No pets please. 

Enjoy the last day of the 2020 season with a guided hike into history. Stephen Zeoli is your guide. The hike will run from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Co-sponsored by Mount Independence Coalition.

Reenactors honor the 1776-1777 history of Mount Independence during this living history weekend.  Saturday’s popular interactive Baldwin Trail Walkabout features experts at trail stations bringing the site’s history to life. Follow the footsteps of soldiers on a woods skirmish, explore camp life and skill demonstrations, take in an illustrated talk, and enjoy activities for all ages. Admission fee: $6. Walk in the tireless footsteps of Revolutionary War soldiers. Visit with Historic Site Interpreters at two key locations. Wear walking shoes and dress for the weather. Pre-registration required. Co-sponsored by Mount Independence Coalition. 

Children will enjoy Revolutionary times learning about Mount Independence, archaeology, and more, with walks and new hands-on activities from 9:30 am to 12:30 each day. Attendees will make special items to bring home. Ages 6 to 11. Limited space. Pre-registration required. Camp fee: $75. Information on sibling discounts and scholarships. Call (802) 948-2000 to register. 

Michael Blakeslee, historic site interpreter and long-time reenactor, speaks about the American chaplains who served at Mount Independence in 1776 and 1777. Who were they, what did they do, and why were chaplains important in the war effort? Learn about a few other soldiers who served here and later became ministers.

To follow up on the book discussion, Ennis Duling, editor of Strong Ground, offers an illustrated talk on the Battle of Bennington, fought on August 16, 1777, and tells stories about the people involved. Co-sponsored by Mount Independence Coalition.

The Orwell Free Library offers a group book discussion on the classic historic novel from 1942, Look to the Mountain, by LeGrand Cannon Jr. The Battle of Bennington is featured in the book.
