Mount Independence

Join the Mount Independence Coalition and the Orwell Free Library for this talk by author, historian and Coalition board member Ennis Duling about the Battle of Bennington. The talk will be centered on people and their personalities, especially John Stark of New Hampshire and Seth Warner of Vermont. Join naturalist, mycologist, and professional photographer Meg Madden for a curiosity walk along the hiking trails of Mount Independence. As a myco-educator Meg loves to share her knowledge of the natural world, particularly when it comes to all things fungi! Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. On this guided tour, walk in the footsteps of Revolutionary War soldiers. Mount Independence Coalition president Stephen Zeoli is your guide from noon until 3:00 PM. This illustrated program introduces some of the resilient women of Vermont’s southern Lake Champlain Valley during the American Revolution, and provides national context. How did the war interrupt their lives? What were their contributions leading to settlement and as founders of their new towns and the new nation? Speakers are site administrator Elsa Gilbertson and site interpreter Paul Andriscin. An event delayed from 2020--in honor of the 101st anniversary of the 19th amendment. Reenactors honor the 1776-1777 history of Mount Independence during this living history event.  The popular interactive Baldwin Trail Walkabout, from 10:30 to 1:30, features experts at trail stations bringing the site’s history to life. Military tacticals and camp life and skills demonstrations. The day ends at 5:00. Admission is $6.00.

Join your guide Steve Zeoli for a 3-plus mile walk around Mount Independence to celebrate National Trails Day. We will walk in the footsteps of Revolutionary War soldiers who encamped here from July 1776 to July 1777, as well as British soldiers stationed her from July to October 1777. There will be a $5.00 entrance fee for adults over 15 years of age. Younger people and Mount Independence Coalition members enter free.

Bring water, a lunch or snacks, and dress appropriately for a day in the woods. The walk is expected to run from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Those who are fully vaccinated are not required to wear a mask. If you have questions, please call 802-948-2000.

On this 10^th annual driving tour, Jim Rowe, president of the Crown Point Road Association, is your leader to look at the first leg of the 1776 Mount Independence-Hubbardton Military Road. Meet at the Mount Independence museum with your own car at 10:00 AM. The tour will end at the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site in Hubbardton at 1:00 PM. Starting in front of the museum, Sue Wetmore, will guide you on this walk to look for and identify the birds of spring. Walk will be held from 8:00 to 10:00 AM. Wear study shoes and dress for the weather. No pets please.
