Back Bedroom & Sitting Room: This was said to have been the servant’s sitting room or an additional bedroom. The period ingrain carpet was donated to the Homestead. The horsehair couch was made in Vermont and at one time was on display at the Old Constitution House in Windsor, another of the Vermont State-Owned Historic Sites. The framed campaign bandana and poster for the election of James Garfield and Chester Arthur for President and Vice President in 1880 are of the period and came from the Chester Arthur State Historic Site in Fairfield. (Arthur was born in Fairfield, VT in 1829). The oil painting of “Dawn” may have been done by Constantino Brumidi or one of his students. Brumidi made a copy of Guido Reni’s “The Aurora” upon which this painting is based. The other oil painting of Justin Morrill with the U.S. Capitol in the background was done as an illustration for an insurance company in the 1960’s. The church pew cushion was from the Strafford church and has Morrill’s name written on the backside.
