HUBBARDTON, Vt.— The night sky will be putting on a major meteor storm, if predictions are correct, on Saturday, May 24, 2014, as debris from Comet 209P/LINEAR, discovered in 2004, burns up in Earth’s atmosphere.   You’re invited to the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site in Hubbardton, Vermont, from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. or later, as members of the Green Mountain Alliance of Amateur Astronomers share their telescopes and extensive knowledge.

PLYMOUTH NOTCH, Vt. – The President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site announces the May 24th opening of its new exhibit “The Coolidges, Plymouth, and the Civil War.” Designated a “Top 10 Vermont Civil War Sesquicentennial Event,” the exhibit examines the Civil War from the perspective of the Coolidge family and their neighbors, many with sons on the front lines serving as Union soldiers.

ORWELL, Vt.—Mount Independence in Orwell is for the birds, especially on Saturday, May 24, 2014, starting at 8:00 a.m., when bird expert Sue Wetmore offers her annual guided “Early Bird Nature Walk.”  Meet in front of the Mount Independence museum for this opening day event. The fee is $5.00 for adults and free for children under 15.

Orwell, VT—Spring into spring by participating in the annual guided spring wildflower walk on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell, Vermont. Amy Olmsted, a nursery professional for more than 20 years, leads this informative program.  Olmsted is a horticulturist with Rocky Dale Gardens in Bristol.

PLYMOUTH NOTCH, Vt. – Pianists Susan Schroeder Cobb and Abigail Charbeneau perform at the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site on Sunday, October 13, at 3:00 p.m.  Refreshments follow at the site’s restaurant, The Wilder House.  The 45 minute concert is free and open to the public; donations are welcome.

John Burgoyne comes to life and visits the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell, Vermont, on Saturday, September 28, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., to ruefully reminisce about his experiences during the American Revolution’s Northern Campaign of 1777.  British actor-playwright Howard Burnham, now based in California, will present his lively and highly acclaimed one-man costumed program.

STRAFFORD, Vt.--The Justin Morrill State Historic Site in Strafford,Vermont, will be closed September 11-15, 2013, during Tunbridge Fair and while Vermont Route 132 from Sharon to the Beaver Meadow Road is closed.  The homestead will reopen for tours on Saturday, September 21.
